After months on the road, the members of Duran Duran were happy to go home and spend the holidays with their families. Simon was with model Claire Stansfield, his beautiful Canadian girlfriend. (There were also tabloid newspaper stories that month that had Simon flying back to Sri Lanka with another girl.) But their vacations were short-lived; a few days later the band was back in New York to star in MTV’s New Year’s Eve Rock ‘n’ Roll Ball, live via cable from the Palladium (then a nightclub) on Fourteenth Street in Union Square, a short walk from Andy Warhol’s Factory.

Duran Duran played for an hour to a full, dancing house, really rocking, and for an enormous cable television audience estimated to be about eight million viewers, the channel’s highest-rated show yet. A bit later, John Taylor was having a drink in the bar when Andy Warhol cruised by. “Andy wandered over,” John remembered, “sipping his drink through a straw. He leaned in to my ear and whispered, ‘You should be the singer.’”

“No thanks, Andy,” John replied.
